This IoT system and data is used by scientists and engineers to monitor magnetic field strengths, temperatures, and beam intensities among many others parameters to determine if the equipment is operating correctly. These critical data management and analytics tasks represent important challenges for the organisation and key technologies including big data, machine learning/AI, IoT, and autonomous data warehouses, coupled cloud based models, can radically optimise the operations. Attend this session to learn from CERN’s experience with IoT systems, Oracle’s cloud and autonomous solutions. #### Speakers: - Manuel Martin (CERN) - Sebastien Masson (CERN) #### ID: CAS2477 #### Type: Session #### Status ACCEPTED #### Date Wednesday, September 18, 09:00 AM - 09:45 AM | Moscone South - Room 152B ### CERN experience: Monitoring our infrastructure with Oracle Management Cloud #### Abstract: The modern trend in the field of IT inside organizations or large corporations is to collect data. Searching logs in large-scale infrastructures is time consuming and it is difficult to have up to date data. How these data can be useful for us? Is there a way to identify and resolve problems promptly? Do we need to monitor our data? Oracle provides the answer to the aforementioned questions with the development of Oracle Management Cloud, a unified monitoring platform. In our talk, we are going to demonstrate some of the key features of the platform and why it can be an important asset for your infrastructure. #### Speakers - Someone from Oracle (Oracle) -> ?? - Aimilios Tsouvelekakis (CERN) #### ID: CON2123 #### Type: Conference Session #### Status ACCEPTED ### 19c Automatic Indexing demystified #### Abstract Automatic but also fully manageable, the 19c Automatic Indexing leverages all the performance advisors to create the optimal indexes without the risk of regressions. It is automated, but not a black box: you can follow all its activity, run it in reporting mode only, or with auto implementation, but still understand what it is doing and why. This session, with a demo on a simple case, will focus on traces, dictionary views and reports to explain step by step how the statements are gathered, analyzed, and optimized. #### Speakers - Franck Pachot (CERN, ACE Director) #### ID: CON1275 #### Type: Conference Session #### Status **Accepted** ### From Transportable Tablespace to Pluggable Database #### Abstract Migrating to the Cloud? Transporting data physically is the fastest, but needs to be flexible enough to transport to different platforms, and different versions. Transportable Tablespaces (TTS) offers both. Multitenant PDB clone and online relocate goes further. Let's see the use-cases: data warehouse ELT, upgrades, migrations, PIT recovery, ... With demos for all those methods. #### Speakers - Franck Pachot (CERN, ACE Director) #### ID: CON1277 #### Type: Conference Session #### Status Submitted ### Long live to CMAN! Or Oracle still cares about CMAN: you should do it too #### Abstract The Oracle Connection Manager (CMAN) is the Swiss-army knife for database connections. It can be used for security, routing, high availability, single-point of contact... Starting with Oracle 18c, it has been extended with the new Traffic Director Mode (CMAN TDM), that allows transparent failover for applications that do not implement it natively. In this session I will introduce briefly what CMAN is capable of, how to configure it in a high availability environment, and how the new release achieves a higher protection level. #### Speakers - Ludovico Caldara (CERN, ACE Director) #### ID: CON1405 #### Type: Conference Session #### Status Submitted ### *Cancelled* ~~Kubernetes: the glue between Oracle Cloud and CERN private Cloud~~ #### Abstract: CERN IT department provides production services to run container technologies. In this context, the CERN team that is responsible for running Java applications on top of Oracle WebLogic, has moved its deployments from virtual or physical servers to containers. Docker together with Kubernetes allow us to improve the overall productivity of the team, reducing operations time and speeding up the time-to-delivery as well as introducing repetitive and reproducible environments. This makes the system highly portable but does not save us in case of disasters. To ensure a higher availability of the system, we are looking into deploying WebLogic in the Oracle Cloud and use Kubernetes Federation to deploy it across Oracle cloud and our Private one. #### Speakers - Antonio Nappi (CERN) #### ID: CAS2199 #### Type: Customer Case Study Session #### Status Accepted ### *TO CHANGE* ~~Kubernetes: the glue between Oracle Cloud and CERN private Cloud~~ #### *TO CHANGE* Abstract: ~~CERN IT department provides production services to run container technologies. What is happening when you need to browse through different files and use complex commands in terminal to get back the proper result? How much time are you spending to get your search results? Big Data and Monitoring is the cutting edge trend for companies and large organizations, on how to identify problems on their infrastructure and resolve them promptly. In this talk, we are going to discuss how Oracle Management Cloud can help identifying issues and what features it offers to enhance the monitoring experience for developers who want their applications to run smoothly. #### Speakers - Someone from Oracle (Oracle) -> ?? - Aimilios Tsouvelekakis (CERN) #### Abstract: The group responsible for ‘database services’ within CERN’s IT department provides specialised monitoring solutions to teams across the laboratory who use the database group infrastructure. These solutions are used for a range of tools, from servers to applications and databases. To accomplish this monitoring functionality, we use two different monitoring stacks: ElasticSearch for log management and InfluxDB for metrics management. During last year Oracle granted CERN with a significant amount of cloud credits to use a unified monitoring platform, Oracle Management Cloud. The purpose of this evaluation was to understand the strengths and weakness of the platform in comparison with the CERN's on premise infrastructure. During this 7 month evaluation period we provided to Oracle feedback on what improvements we would like to see in their platform which would make it fit for the purpose of large organizations or corporations. The purpose of this talk is to outline how a monitoring platform like Oracle management Cloud can be useful for developers, which tasks can facilitate their everyday workload and provide answers on how promptly and accurately some urgent incidents can be resolved. Furthermore, we would like to share our experience from using the platform to a certain extent during our evaluation period. #### ID: DEV2190 #### Type: Developer Session #### Status Submitted ### One tool to rule them all: how CERN runs application servers on Kubernetes #### Abstract: Kubernetes and Docker Containers are the best solution for microservices architecture but they also help you to modernize and easily split monolithic applications in small pieces. This is one of the reasons why the CERN IT department is investing in them. In this presentation, the team at CERN responsible to run Java based platforms ( WebLogic and Tomcat), will share its experience on how deploy web application servers from virtual and physical servers to containers. Looking at a real use case, you will find answers to questions like: how to deploy my application in Kubernetes? How do certificates and SSL work in this world? What about logging and monitoring? How upgrade or patch my environment? What about persistence? How manage secrets ? #### Speakers - Antonio Nappi (CERN) #### ID: DEV2086 #### Type: Cloud Native ( Developer Session ) #### Status Accepted ### 10 features you will miss if you leave Oracle Database #### Abstract The choice of the database technology is in the hands of the developers, and Open Source alternatives look appealing. Many talks and paper show the growing features of MySQL or PostgreSQL, which competes with the commercial RDBMS. But do not forget the core features that are there for decades, which may not be there, or less efficient, in those alternative solutions. Let's show those basic features, with demos: in-place updates, cursor sharing, guaranteed disk writes, advanced materialized views, IOT, wait events, online operations,... Many were already in Oracle 30 years ago and we take them for granted. We may not realize what we will miss when going to another RDBMS. #### Speakers - Franck Pachot (CERN, ACE Director) #### ID: DEV1279 #### Type: Developer Session #### Status **Accepted** ### Let your DBAs get some REST(api) #### Abstract In a DEV world where everything is built automatically (with Jenkins, Gitlab, Maven...), the developers still struggle to integrate some operational tasks in their build pipelines. Despite tools like Ansible, Puppet and Rundeck are being used by more and more companies, some DBAs need (or want) to keep control over their legacy scripts. How can the developers convince the DBAs to implement some useful REST endpoints without much development effort? In this session I will introduce some ideas for integration between applications, ORDS and operational scripts that will help cooperation between developers and DBAs. #### Speakers - Ludovico Caldara (CERN, ACE Director) #### ID: DEV1406 #### Type: Developer Session ### -
